The superstructure addition to a residential building in the centre of Vienna proved to be one of our most challenging projects. The goal was to construct two additional residential floors on top of an existing apartment building approximately 150 years old, which had been listed as a cultural heritage monument. Reinforced concrete was ruled out as an option following a detailed engineering analysis — the old building would not have been able to bear the load of traditional slabs and columns. The solution turned out to be a lightweight steel structure combined with timber walls and floors formed with OSB panels. The entire metal structure, with a total weight of approximately 27 tonnes, was manufactured in our workshop in Bulgaria, then transported and assembled on site in Vienna. The installation was carried out using a large mobile crane positioned just 2–3 metres from the building — one of the few cranes of its kind in Europe, also used in the construction of the Sofia Television Tower. The project is a telling example of how steel construction offers an effective solution even under the most complex architectural and technical conditions.
